Winter Weekend Fun in Columbus, GA!

Let's face it…we're in the middle of a not-so-fun winter and it's the end of a long week…so that means we're all in the need of a little fun this weekend.  So how 'bout we give you a couple of ideas to get you started, then head to the Community Calendar to find out more details on these events and to see all the other events going on.

This is pretty impressive…the Liberty Theatre (813 8th Ave) is staging the world premiere of a play called “Blues for Mama” that was written by playwright Jonathan S.E. Perkins…who happens to be from Columbus! Haven’t seen this yet but the plot sounds like something we can all relate to—tells the story of the Hope family, in particular the matriarch, Mavis Hope, who’s had to retire because of poor health. And at a time you’d think should be more relaxing for her, in steps her two adult children (who are complete opposites in personality), an outspoken granddaughter, mounting bills and just when she’s about to blow her top, in steps a mysterious stranger who completely changes everything, but not without a lot of drama and humor!  Performances will be held now through February 13 and will begin at 8:00pm, with Sunday matinees at 3:00pm.  Admission is $15 for adults and $13 for military, Seniors, and students.  (706.610.0255)

If you’ve ever been to a performance in Legacy Hall at RiverCenter  (Broadway in Uptown Columbus), no doubt you’ve seen the wall that’s entirely covered with a pipe organ. You may have seen it, but have you ever heard this thing being played? It’s unreal!! This doesn’t happen very often but this Sunday (4:00pm) CSU Organist Joseph Golden will be at the mighty Jordan Organ, accompanied by CSU brass and percussion ensembles, two violas, and English horn, and a harp in a concert unlike anything you’ve heard! In addition to all that, the concert will end with a Grand Improvisation, based on a contest-winning, student composed theme that we’ll all get to hear together for the first time anywhere!  And can you believe it…admission is FREE to this one.  (706.256.3612)

There’s more music this weekend with a big band concert benefiting the orchestra program in Muscogee County School District schools and it features the Columbus Cavaliers—a 17-piece big band that plays swing music. The show starts at 7:30pm at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center. Admission is $10. (706.323.4649)

There’s only one good thing about this cold, windy, wet, dreary weather we’ve been having and that’s it makes for a good reason to curl up in your favorite chair with a blanket and a mug of hot chocolate and dive into some really good books! So if you need to get stocked up on good reading material, you’ve got to check out the big Muscogee County Friends of Libraries Biannual Book Sale going on this weekend at the Columbus Public Library  (3000 Macon Road). They will have thousands of books to choose from…and get this…most of them are priced at $1 or less! Not only can you rack up some great books, but all the proceeds from the sale help support Library programming activities, author events, volunteer services and lots more.  (706.243.2674)

This is turning out to be a weekend full of great music because not only do we have the organ concert and some big band music, but there’s going to be a Pops concert featuring music from the movies E.T., Apollo 13, Star Trek, and Star Wars all played by and benefiting the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus. Not only will you be entertained by this talented bunch, but you’ll also be fed a full lunch. Since they are going to be feeding folks, you need to make reservations for this one…so they’ll have enough to go around for everyone!  It's all taking place Sunday beginning at 12:30pm at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center and admission is $30 for adults and $15 for ages 10 & under.  That a great deal for entertainment and a great lunch!  (706.256.3614)

And finally, if you need a little laughter in your life, check out the one-man comedy and singing event with Jimmy "Swan" Swaniga—who has performed at The Springer Opera House, Civic Center, and The Bradley Theatre—this Saturday night beginning at 8:00pm at Columbus State University. Remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg…there are lots of events going on this weekend and you can find out more on the City's Community Calendar.

Now, go have some fun…
