Winter Fun in Columbus, GA!

It's winter.  It's cold.  But it's never too cold to get out and have a little fun!  There are plenty of things going on this weekend, so if you're looking for ideas of things to get out and do with friends and family, maybe this will get you started.  Don't forget to visit the Community Calendar to get more details on the following list of events and to see all the other things taking place.  We all work hard so it's nice to have something fun to look forward to on the weekend.

Let's face it..no matter how old we are, there's still a little bit of a kid in all of us and one thing we never outgrow is the circul!  Well get ready, the circus is coming to the Columbus Civic Center! The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey present Zing Zang Zoom, a very magical circus experience. You’ll enjoy high-flying excitement heart-pounding acts featuring illusionists, a duo that hangs by their hair at 35 feet in the air, and many other daredevils. These performances will definitely make your jaw drop and you scratch your head wondering how in the world they did that! And of course, no circus would be complete without the animals and the clowns. They’ve got everything form dogs and cats to lions and elephants and the clowns will keep you laughing with their silly antics and musical mayhem. Definitely something the whole family will enjoy.  Performances will be held Friday (Jan 14) at 7:00pm, Saturday (Jan 15) at 2:30 and 6:30pm and Sunday (Jan 16) at 2:00pm.  Tickets range from $13-$30.  (706.653.4460)

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is back in action this weekend at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts as they present, “Man…It’s Mahler!” The performance will feature Part One: How to Listen to a Mahler Symphony with live musical examples and Part Two: Mahler Symphony No. 5 in C-Sharp Minor. The CSO always does an outstanding job and is an extraordinarily talented group of musicians. And if you're just getting into classical music and are still learning, make sure you get there early at 6:45 for “Know the Score,” a pre-concert conversation with Conductor George del Gobbo and a complimentary glass of wine. What a great date night! Tickets for this are anywhere from $5-$36. (706.256.3612)

If you’re in Uptown Columbus this Saturday, January 15 and you hear the sounds of a marching band, move to the sidewalks, because the Martin Luther King Parade will be coming through! The Parade will start in Phenix City and come across the 13th Street Bridge into Columbus and down Broadway. Times are 1:00 – 3:00pm. If it happens to rain, the parade will be rescheduled for January 22.

Ok, if you have health issues, take more medications than you would like, think you can leave wheat bread on the counter for more than 3 days or eat less than 10 servings of fruit and vegetables each day, then this event is for you. The Friendship Café (inside Albright's Florist on University Ave.) will hold a “Better Health through Real Bread and Healthy Eating” seminar this Saturday morning at 10:00am. The class is taught by Beverly Pope and can help you to keep the New Year resolution to eat better and become healthier. The seminar fee is only $5 and plan to get there early for muffins, coffee, and juice.  (706.507.2487)

The Columbus Museum always has fantastic exhibits on display and right now is no exception with their regional history exhibition, “150 Years Later: Our Civil War and Its Legacy.” They usually hold some pretty cool events that are related to their current exhibits and this Sunday they will have their Family Art Affair program where attendees will learn how to make a Civil War era drum that they will get to take home with them. This event is completely free. In fact, there is never any regular admission fee to go to the Columbus Museum. This is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the kids that’s fun, hands-on and educational.  (706.748.2562)

So are you ready for the weekend now?  Like you need help to get excited about the weekend!  Don't forget to visit the Community Calendar and you can get more details on these events and see the complete list of other happenings in and around Columbus.

Now, go have some fun…
