What’s there to do in Columbus, GA this weekend?

What's going on this weekend? Glad you asked because there's a lot to get out and do! Here are a few ideas to get you started but don't forget to visit the Community Calendar to get a complete list of events taking place.

Hopefully you had a great 4th of July celebration with family & friends, but hey, the party isn’t over yet! You have a chance to live it all over again at Callaway Gardens this Friday (July 9) with a night of FREE fun and fireworks! Now, Callaway always has one of the biggest celebrations in the area for July 4th, but this year they had a technical problem with the electrical system that kept some of the fireworks from launching & that’s not how they do things at Callaway Gardens. This is a 1st class organization and since this show did not live up to their standards, they want to invite everyone back for another of fun with music on the beach, a circus performance and fireworks. So grab your beach towel and pack a picnic and head to Callaway to kick off your weekend. Gates will open for this free event at 5:00pm and the fireworks are scheduled to launch about 9:30pm. Callaway Gardens is located in Pine Mountain, GA. (800.CALLAWAY) www.callawaygardens.com

Here are a couple of cool things happening at Lakebottom Park you might like to check out…especially if you’re in the mood to get out and play! First up, Beyond the Game Sport & Social Club is introducing Co-Ed Sand Volleyball starting up this Sunday (1:00pm). You can enter a team of up to 7 people or you can sign up as an individual (check website for details). If you’d like something a bit more laid back but still a good workout, you can take FREE T’ai Chi classes at the park on Mondays and Wednesday nights (6;30pm)! What a great setting for this activity and it’s open to anyone who wants to learn this discipline. Instructors do ask that parents accompany children and make sure you wear loose-fitting clothing! If you want more details about volleyball, check out their website at www.btgsports.net and for more T'ai Chi info, you can call (706) 662.8795.

I ran into a young lady earlier this week who was out doing final errands for her wedding this Saturday and while she’s excited about the actual ceremony, she's really looking forward to getting to her honeymoon destination so she can plop down on the beach and rest from all the preparation for this event! It’s amazing all the details, big and small, you have take care of to produce the wedding of your dreams, but not to worry, if there’s one in your near future, check out the Wedding Extravaganza at the Trade Center (Front Ave) this Sunday (July 11) beginning at 12:30pm. There’s a big fashion show planned and tons of exhibits and experts on hand to give you ideas on everything from entertainment to receptions to honeymoons! Plus there’ll be demos, samples, and chances to win great prizes. Admission is only $6. (678.548.9498) www.weddingsofgeorgia.com

If you’re in the mood for some theatre this weekend, you have a chance to take in an encore performance of an original stage play called “Words.” This was presented once before at the Liberty Theatre to huge crowds so if you couldn’t get in the first time, here’s your opportunity to see it. The story revolves around a character named Darlene Russell who just isn’t a nice person…everyone calls her DarMEAN! She gets diagnosed with breast cancer, goes away for a while for treatment, and when she returns back to work at her restaurant, her employees are astounded at how her personality has changed. “Words” promises to be a buffet of laughs and tears and will make you think about the little things in life that mean so much! Take some Kleenex just in case… Performances will be held Thursday and Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 5:00pm and 8:00pm and the last show will be held Sunday (July 11) at 6:00pm. Admission is $12. (706.561.8065)

How about a little smooth jazz music to wind down the weekend? You’re in luck because this Sunday is the monthly Jazz Jam at the Liberty Theatre (813 8th Ave.) brought to you by the Columbus Jazz Society! This month they are welcoming special guest Joe Gransden, who’s released 8 CDs and has been compared vocally to Frank Sinatra! They’ll also have hamburgers, hot dogs and sodas available for purchase. Admission: $10. (706) 660.9295 http://columbusjazzsociety.com

There's plenty to do, just get out and enjoy!

Now, go have some fun,

shelby
