Weekend Full of Fun in Columbus, GA!
The weekend is here and not a minute too soon because there is a lot of fun stuff to get out and do with family and friends! In fact, this time of year there's so much going on, you might want to take a look at the Community Calendar to get the full scope of all that's happening.
If you like to step back in time for the holidays…I mean WAY back in time, then you’re going to love what’s they have planned at the beautiful Windsor Hotel in Americus, GA this Friday & Saturday nights (Nov 12 & 13). It’s the 23rd Annual Madrigal Dinner that's put on in conjunction with the Music and Theatre Departments at GA Southwestern State University. These guys go all out for this every year with great costumes and scenery, music that will really get you in the mood for the holiday season, and of course food, food and more food served in three courses! You might even want to make a weekend of it because you can get a package that not only includes meals for two, but also overnight accommodations in one of the hotels Chamber suites! And if you’ve never stayed in the Windsor, you’re in for a treat…it's like a European castle was plucked out of the countryside and nestled into downtown Americus. Tickets for the dinner are $39.95 each or get the package for $169 for two. Cocktails are from 6:00-7:00pm and the dinner begins at 7:00pm. (229.924.1555)
Here’s a brand new event you need to check out this Saturday. There are over 500 runners from 20 states & 3 foreign countries expected to run the inaugural Soldier Marathon, Half-Marathon, and Relay Marathon. The race kicks off at the National Infantry Museum at 7:00am and the marathoners will run the 26.2 mile course that will take them thru sites like Oxbow Meadows, Uptown Columbus, the RiverWalks on the Columbus and Phenix City sides of the river, the TSYS Campus and more! Having a marathon and half-marathon that’s certified by the United States Track & Field organization is pretty cool, but the really great thing about this event is that the proceeds will go to help soldiers & veterans who live in this area! Make sure you tour the Infantry Museum while you're there…it's really incredible. If you want to run, there's still time to sign-up and registration is anywhere from $45-$75, depending on the race you run. (706.507.3119)
So after you cheer on the runners in the Soldier Marathon, head to Uptown Columbus for the 2010 Veterans Day Parade that kicks off at 1:00pm in Phenix City, crosses the 13th St. Bridge, travels down Broadway and ends at 9th Street. Another great way for us to show support and a nice way to honor the many men and women who have served our country! (706.576.5475)
Ok, think about this one…there are only a few books in the history of the universe that we can all quote from…and one of those has to be the classic from Dr. Seuss, Green Eggs & Ham! That’s what’s going to be so much fun about the event the Columbus Symphony Orchestra is putting on this Sunday at RiverCenter (Broadway). Even before the concert cranks up, there’s going to be all sorts of fun going on like musical games, an instrument petting zoo, up close and personal encounters with the orchestra’s musicians, and even a chance to conduct the orchestra itself! What a cool way to introduce a whole different world of music to kids…and something tells me us big kids will like it too. All the activities will be held from 2:00-3:15pm and the concert begins at 3:30pm. Admission is only $8. www.csoga.org
If you’d like to put a little theatre on the weekend menu, then you might want to check out the production of “God’s Man in Texas” at the Springer Opera House (103 10th St.). It all centers around one of those big-mega churches, called Rock Baptist, in Houston…you know, one of those churches that has all sorts of media, gym, swimming pool, bowling alley, dinner theatre, and ministries for all sorts of folks. Well, Rock’s legendary 81-year old pastor is retiring and a new, much younger…and probably a little hipper…minister comes to town and the struggle between these two men is biblical! Rated PG-13 and admission is $35. You can catch it this weekend and also next Thrusday-Saturday. (706.327.3688) www.springeroperahouse.org
How about some arts & crafts? This Saturday (9:30am), head to Columbus Botanical Garden for a hands-on workshop called Great Gourds—Gifts from the Garden! You'll get to begin a project using gourds to take home with you! Cost to join in the class is $25 (706.327.8400) www.columbusbotanicalgarden.com
Maybe that will be enough to whet your appetite for something to do this weekend. But don't forget, there's plenty more ideas on the Community Calendar.
Now, go have some fun…
