Valentine’s Day Weekend Fun in Columbus, GA!
So here we are at the threshold of the weekend…and not just any weekend, but it's Valentine's Day weekend! So needless to say, you need to find something to do with your sweetie! To get you started, here are just a couple of ideas, but remember, you can always take a look at the Community Calendar for tons of things to see and do.
I think it may be the law that you have to do something special on Valentine’s Day with your sweetie and if you’ve had trouble coming up with ideas for that something special, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra has the answer for you. This Monday, February 14, the CSO presents “ValenTango” featuring a Tango Quartet at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. This is a double treat because instead of just hearing wonderful music, you’ll also get a high energy Tango dance performance. So it’s like 2 for the price of one. I’ve heard rumors that a Tango dance contest will somehow be incorporated into the evening, but you’ll have to get your tickets and be there in the audience to see what happens. So get out your party clothes and dancing shoes and get ready for some fun! Tickets are $35. (706.256.3612)
So maybe you’re looking to start collecting antiques or you want to add to your collection or you just want something for your home…whatever the reason may be, you need to make sure you check out Historic Columbus’ Antique Sale this weekend (700 Broadway). On Friday (10:00am-5:00pm), the sale is only open to Historic Columbus Members but on Saturday, the sale is open to the public (10:00am-4:00pm). There will be all sorts of goodies…furniture, silver, home accent pieces and more. All proceeds from the house will benefit the maintenance of Historic Columbus House Museums. If you want to check out some of the items for sale before you go, visit historiccolumbus.com for pictures and listings. (706.322.0756)
There are a couple of different music event going on this weekend as well. Up first, the students of Faculty Artist and Professor of Voice Earl Coleman will present an afternoon of opera, art songs and musical theatre on Sunday, February 14 at 4:00pm at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. These students have been winners in national, state and local voice competitions. FREE! (706.256.3612)
And there’s more great music on the agenda this weekend. The Columbus Jazz Society will have their monthly jazz jam and concert this Sunday at 6:00pm at the Historic Liberty Theatre (813 8th Ave). The guest artist is The Lou Vallee Four featuring Suzanne Swan. This talented group of musicians has very impressive resumes and their combined talents should make for a special evening of great music and a wonderful atmosphere. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day a little early. What’s more romantic than really good jazz in a beautiful theatre. I promise you’ll score major points if you surprise your other half with an evening of live music. The concert starts at 6:00pm and the jam session begins at 8:00pm so mark your calendars now! Admission is only $10. (706.660.9295)
Now that it’s getting close to Spring and we’ve been teased with warmish temperatures, people are starting to think about getting outside and getting their gardens ready. If you like to grow things and love to cook with fresh herbs, then this class is for you. CSU’s Continuing Education department is holding an Herb Gardening class at the Columbus Botanical Garden this Saturday beginning at 9:00am. Herbs are very popular because they’re easy to grow, fragrant, and delicious! During the course, you’ll learn the basics of herb gardening and some great tips for successful harvesting and use of your herbs. This is a great class for green thumbs of all experience levels. Cost to join in is $39. (706.507.8070)
And finally, if you need some nature time this weekend, Oxbow Meadows is having their Second Sunday program. This is the 14th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count and will be followed by a presentation and then a hike led by birding experts through Oxbow Meadows’ wetlands. Admission is only $3 and the program starts at 2 PM. (706.687.4090)
Hope you have a very Happy Valentine's Day!
Now, go have some fun…
