The Family’s All Here…Now What?!

Well, the holidays are upon us…and so that means family and friends descending on your house as well! That's what this time of year is all about…spending time together and enjoying these special days. But what happens when all the presents are open, you've eaten way too many carbs, and the kids are having more fun playing with the boxes the toys came in than the toys themselves? It's time to get out of the house and find something fun to do! Believe it or not, there are lots of things going on during this holiday weekend that will entertain all ages. And don't forget to check out the Community Calendar to find out more details and to see a complete listing of events. So here's a quick rundown…

You can always count on the Springer Opera House for amazing productions and this week is no exception. There's something for everyone with "The Wizard of Oz" (great for all ages) being performed on the main stage and "A Tuna Christmas," which is without a doubt a true Columbus holiday tradition, being held in Foley Hall and remember…it is rated PG-13! Both shows run through December 23. If you are in need of a little laughter this holiday season—for whatever reason—make time to go see "A Tuna Christmas." I've seen it almost every year and I still laugh until I cry in certain scenes!

There are also some things going on at the Columbus Civic Center you might want to check out. Our beloved Columbus Cottonmouths will be hitting the ice taking on the Augusta RiverHawks Thursday (Dec. 23) at 7:30pm and tickets range from $12-$28. Or if you'd rather get out on the ice, they'll have public ice skating Sunday and Monday (Dec 26 & 27) with two sessions…2:00-3:30pm and 4:30-6:00pm. Admission is $7 and you can rent skates for $3.

Don't forget that the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus is open everyday (9:00am-5:00pm) except for Christmas Day. This is a great place to take visiting family and friends and who knows, they might even pick up a little history lesson or two while they're here! It's worth the trip just to see and climb aboard that life-size replica of the USS Water Witch that's been constructed in their front yard. This thing is really impressive…in fact, it's just been awarded a major award from the Georgia Association of Museum and Galleries.

If you want to treat your guests to one of the most dazzling holiday light displays in the country, just north of Columbus to Callaway Gardens (in Pine Mountain, GA) for Fantasy in Lights. There's really no way to describe just how beautiful it is and do it justice…you just have to see it to believe it! You can drive through in your car or take the Jolly Trolley. This will be running until December 30.

We wish you very happy holidays and here's hoping that 2011 will be the best year yet!

Now, go have some holiday fun…
