Rain, Rain Go Away!  ‘Cause it’s time for fun in Columbus, GA!

There's nothing like a good rainy day. I love rain.  I really do.  But come on, enough already...even I'm over all these stormy days.  Hopefully, we'll get a few windows of sunshine this weekend so we can all get out and play!  There's quite a bit going on this weekend and to get a peek at all the happenings, check out the Event Calendar for all the details.  Here's a look at a few things I've got on my to-do list...

They took a break for a couple of weeks, but this weekend the Classic Movies at the Springer Opera House are back in full swing. In fact, the summer series will end next weekend so don’t miss your chance to see some great movies in such a classically beautiful setting. Tonight you can see The Big Lebowski at 7pm. This film is rated R so get a babysitter and enjoy a night out. Tomorrow, you can take the kids to see The Princess Bride at 2pm. This just happens to be one of my all time favorite movies! And tomorrow at 7pm, all the Marilyn fans out there can get tickets for Some Like It Hot showing at 7pm. The Players Saloon is open before and during the shows for snacks and refreshments so I promise, you won’t go hungry! Tickets for all movies are only $10.

Opening this weekend at the Columbus Museum is an exhibit I am extremely excited to see and have been waiting for forever…Warhol in Southern Collections. This exhibit will feature over 100 Warhol works from 1964 – 1983, including the famous and iconic Campbell’s Soup can series and the brightly colored Marilyn Monroe prints. These works come from museums and private collectors located throughout the South. Not only will the exhibit itself knock your socks off, but there will be 5 life-size resin and acrylic Andy Warhols created by contemporary artist Jack Dowd installed at the entrance to the gallery. This show runs in conjunction with the celebration of the museum’s 60th anniversary and is FREE!!

The Historic Linwood Foundation and the Fort Moore MCoE are hosting a ceremony to commemorate the life of General Henry Lewis Benning on Saturday, July 13 at 10am. Music will be provided by the MCoE Band and the color guard will present the flag. A presentation will be made by Foundation and Fort Moore personnel. The event will take place near the grave of General Benning.  This one is free, too!

If you’re ready for a creepy crawly good time, make sure you load up the family and head to Oxbow Meadows this Saturday for their annual Insectival! If you’ve never eaten an insect, spit a cricket or seen the world through a bug’s eye, this is something you must experience. From 10am to 3pm, it’s all about the awesome insect world…imagine, a day dedicated to bugs! There really will be a cricket spitting contest as well as lots of creepy crawly crafts and food, an Insectival science booth with demonstrations, a live honey extraction from a beehive and more! Get ready to be bugged eye from all the insect related fun you can get into! Admission is only $5 and kids 3 and under get in free...and just to warn you, they always have a huge crowd for this one so you might want to get there early!

Oh, and can't we all identify with this one!  The Ugly Duckling was always one of my favorite stories when I was a kid so I’m excited about this show at the Springer.  "Honk, Jr. The Musical" is a musical retelling of this classic story. This upbeat adaptation is set in springtime and a mother duck notices that one of her five eggs is quite larger than the others. When they hatch, this duck looks very different, with large grey feathers instead of the soft yellow down of his siblings. His brothers and sisters make fun of him and call him ugly but he soon discovers that he is truly beautiful, both inside and out – and proves that some eggs just can’t be beaten...get it?! This show is perfect for kids ages 4 to 400! It’s a feel good, world-wide sensation that’s been seen by more than 5 million people. Don’t miss out on your chance to see it too!

See?  I told you...lots of great stuff to get out and do this weekend.  If we can just get the rain to hold off until Monday!

Now, go have some fun...
