New Year, New Fun in Columbus, GA!

So if you're thinking that just because the holidays are over, then all the fun must be done as well...think again!  There's always plenty of cool stuff to get out and do...you just have to get out and do it!  A good way to start planning your weekend itinerary is by checking out the Event Calendar to get a look at what's out there.

Attention art lovers! This weekend is your last chance to see the current exhibit at the Columbus Museum, “Beautiful and Practical: Newcomb College and American Art Pottery. This exhibit will close Jan 6 so make plans to check it out before it’s too late. Also, every Saturday in the month of January, the museum is offering drop-in tours. These tours will be one hour in length and will cover the permanent collection and temporary exhibits. The tours start at 2pm and are free and no registration is required. Museum tours are usually self-guided so this is a great opportunity to see the museum, while hearing the information from an expert. Remember, the Columbus Museum is always free!

Tonight (Jan 4) at 7:30pm, the Columbus Cottonmouths will host the Huntsville Havoc at the Columbus Civic Center. The Cottonmouths had a great season last year so this is sure to be a fun and exciting game. Tickets are $12.75 - $30.75.  Go Snakes!!

We’re lucky as we usually have pretty mild winters where we can still get outside and enjoy the outdoors. And FDR State Park has activities and programs lined up for you this month to make sure you aren’t cooped up inside and they’ll help you get a start on that resolution to get in shape!  First up it's "Bark in the Park:  Dog Parade & Walk."  Bring your canine friend and let’s go for an easy walk through the forest. Both you and your furry friend will enjoy new sounds, sights and discoveries, and get some exercise. Dogs must be on a 6-foot leash. Even if you don’t have a pet, come join in the fun! They’ll meet next to the Trading Post. Make sure you bring water and $5 for the parking fee. This will be every Saturday thru Jan 26.  Or, check out "Holiday Bird Tree"--Come and test your bird IQ. Every Sunday thru Jan 27, from 11am – 1pm, learn all about our winter feathered friends and make an edible ornament for the birds in your yard to enjoy. Meet at the Park Office.  Or, discover the winter woodlands and all its inhabitants as you trek through hardwood bottoms along part of Mountain Creek Trail with the "Winter Wonder Walk." This is an easy walk, less than 1-mile for ages 6 and up. Another good way to kick off those fitness goals and get the whole family on the healthy track. Meet next to the Trading Post. This will take place every SUN thru Jan 27 from 1:30 – 3:00pm.

And finally, if you were one of the lucky ones (and I know a couple of you who were!) that got engaged over the holidays, then put this one on your list.  At the Convention & Trade Center, it’s the Wedding Extravaganza by Weddings of Georgia! Enjoy tons of vendors, a fashion show, and aisle after aisle of the area’s leading wedding professionals. You’ll find everything you need to plan your big dream wedding, from entertainment to photographers to receptions to honeymoons. You can even get a free limo ride from the Trade Center to the Garrett-Bullock House and back to see this awesome historic venue. Many exhibitors will offer demonstrations, samples and money-saving specials. You’ll also have the chance to win great gifts and prizes. It’s never too early to start planning!  Admission is only $6 and it all gets underway at 12:30pm this Sunday (Jan 6).

Here's hoping 2013 will be the best year yet for all of us!

Now, go have some fun...
