It’s Time for Weekend Fun in Columbus, GA!

I've heard so many people talking about what a LONG week this has been...maybe it's that Dog Days of Summer thing!  But not to worry, the weekend is almost here and there is plenty to get out and do.  You may want to start your plans by checking out the Community Event Calendar to get a look at some of the things happening, but in the meantime, here's a quick look at a few of the things going on.

Ever walked through a field, the woods or even your backyard and you see some sort of tracks across the ground? Then wondered what animal paid you a visit? If so, you need to go to Oxbow Meadows’ Second Sunday Program, “On the Right Track.” You'll learn about tracks and the animals that make them. After this you’ll be a pro at identifying the tracks of local wildlife. Participants will even get to take home their own special set of tracks. After the program, there will be a guided hike along the wetland trail. This is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon (starts at 2:00pm) with your kids either before they go back to school or to reward them for starting back this week.

It’s always good to be prepared for the unthinkable, especially if you have kids, work with kids or work with the general public on a regular basis. This Saturday (Aug 11), the Continuing Education Department at CSU is offering a CPR and AED course. This basic lesson will teach you how to correctly perform CPR and to use an automated external defibrillator on adults, children and infants. After the course and once you’ve demonstrated proficiency in the skills you learned, you will leave as a possible everyday hero, certified by the American Safety and Health Institute. The class is only from 9am to 12pm and those three hours could prove to be the most valuable three hours you ever spent.

If you're in the mood for some jazz this weekend, you've hit the jackpot!  This Friday (Aug 10), from 7pm – 9pm, The Loft will host an all-ages free jazz performance. The Cavaliers will perform vintage big band tunes on August 10. Should be a great show and you can grab dinner first at Downstairs at the Loft.  Then on Sunday (Aug 12), The Columbus Jazz Society will have their monthly Jazz Jam and Concert this Sunday from 6-9pm. The location has changed…it is now at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. The featured artist is Kenyon Carter. Another great opportunity to hear some great music.

Are you up for something a bit more challenging this weekend? Columbus has become a Triathlon Mecca!  It was home to a Half Iron Distance in April, a Sprint in July and this Saturday, there will be both an Olympic Triathlon and a Duathlon in Uptown Columbus. The Olympic Triathlon will consist of a 1500-meter swim, a 24-mile bike ride and a 6.2-mile run. The Duathlon will consist of a 2-mile run, 25-mile bike ride and a 10-mile run. Whew! Just thinking about that makes me tired! These events will start at 7am behind the Iron Works Convention & Trade Center if you’re interested in watching come amazing athletes in action! Registration proceeds from these events benefits House of Heroes.

We’re in for a special treat this Sunday afternoon…RiverCenter is gearing up for its 10th anniversary this season and in preparation, a special concert, “Four Hands/Four Feet,” is set for 4pm. The concert will feature the Jordan Concert Organ in Legacy Hall. This organ is amazing! It weighs more than 40,000 pounds and has almost 3,600 pipes. And if you’re not a classical music fan, don’t worry….this isn’t your grandmother’s organ recital. Attendees will hear jazz, classical music, and the finale, “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The concert will last about an hour and will feature 14 different organists. It’s the perfect way to end your weekend. And it’s completely free!

Now, go have some fun...
