First Weekend of Summer in Columbus, GA!

Well, the hazy, crazy, and lazy days of summer are here, so we might as well kick off this season with a weekend full of fun!  And it looks like there's something for everyone...anything from butterflies to dinosaurs!

It’s time again…for the 14th annual Denim & Diamonds Concert this Saturday, June 22 at the Columbus Civic Center. Every year they bring in a great performer and this year is no exception…in fact they may have outdone themselves in my opinion because The Band Perry is sure to put on a fantastic show! Some of their recent hits include Better Dig Two, If I Die Young, You Lie, and Done. All of their songs are really good and will have you up and dancing in the aisles. I love their edgy look and that their sound is a little different than most country music. All proceeds from this concert benefit Columbus Hospice and Columbus Hospice of Alabama. So you get to enjoy a great night out with friends and support a wonderful cause that helps so many in our community.

OK, so who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss!?!?! Fans can see some of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz and JoJo, a little Who boy with a BIG imagination Friday night (6.21) at the Riverside Theatre Complex in Uptown Columbus. All of these characters will be brought to life..the story centers around Horton who finds himself faced with a big challenge. Not only must he protect his little friend JoJo and the whole Who village from a world of naysayers and dangers but he must also guard an abandoned bird egg! It’s an adventure the whole family will love! Instead of family move night, make it family theatre night!

Learn all about the nature of the beautiful butterfly this Saturday, June 22, from 10am to noon during Oxbow Meadow’s Colorful Creations art program. It begins with a 30-minute educational program followed by an hour long art class taught by Rita Mead of Brush Busters. Registration is required!

Want to get a glimpse of what the days of dinosaurs might have been like? Come to Discover the Dinosaurs this weekend at the Trade Center. This is a unique hands-on exhibit that consists of up to 60 museum quality and animatronic dinosaurs that gives you the opportunity to get close and touch them. Some of the dinosaurs come to life with the push of a button, making them move, breather and even roar! You can even control some of their movement! Along with the animatronic dinosaurs, there will be museum quality static exhibits. After you’ve marveled at the dinosaurs, there is also lots of kids activities including dinosaur rides,  mini golf, inflatables, a dino dig, dino theater, dino coloring station and more! There’s even a Scavenger Hunt! Definitely something different to do with the family!

It’s time for fandoms to unite! If you’re a Twi-hard, Trekker, Whovian, Potterhead, Dragonballer, Marvel Zombie or Tribute then you need to listen up! Come celebrate your love for your favorite fandoms by attending the first ever fandom mini-convention at the Columbus Public Library on Macon Road this Saturday (6.22). You can make fan inspired crafts, participate in cosplay, trivia and art contests, browse vendors and much more! There will even be appearances from some special guests including Galaxy Man from Galactic Quest Comics and a virtual chat with author Marissa Meyers. This convention is completely free and is geared to teenagers but everyone is invited to attend!

The Crowley Classic Film Series continues this weekend at the Springer Opera House as they show several different movies on a big screen in the main theatre. Tonight (6.21) at 7pm see Young Frankenstein and tomorrow (6.22) at 2pm see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and at 7pm see Breakfast at Tiffany’s…one of my all time favorites! There’s nothing like seeing a classic movie in such a beautiful historic setting! Tickets are $10 and The Saloon is open before hand for snacks and refreshments!

Don't forget to take a look at the Event Calendar to get the scoop on all the goings-on in and around Columbus.

Now, go have some fun...
