Can You Stand Some Weekend Fun?
Are you kidding? If it were up to me, I'd say let's get this weekend started now, but since we all want to keep our jobs, maybe we should just stick to doing a little weekend planning! Here's a quick look at just a few of the things taking place this weekend, but you can find tons more information on the Community Calendar so make sure you use that tool in making your plans.
There aren’t many people who are more of an icon in the entertainment industry than Lucille Ball! If you remember sitting on the floor in front of the big, color console TV and laughing until you cried watching Lucy & all the situations she got herself into, you are in for a treat at the RiverCenter Saturday night (March 5 @ 7:30pm). There’s a performance called “An Evening with Lucille Ball—Thank you for Asking,” and it’s a one-woman show (Suzanne LaRusch) directed by Lucy’s own daughter, Lucie Arnaz. You WILL NOT believe how much this performer looks and sounds like Lucille Ball…it’s uncanny! In this show, She’ll be sharing her memories of I Love Lucy sketches & her 30-year television career. She’ll even dish on her tempestuous marriage to Desi Arnaz! Tickets range from $10-$47. (706.256.3612)
What’s that old saying…”March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb….” or something to that effect! This month is known for breezy and windy days so this is perfect timing for us to head to Florence Marina State Park this Saturday for their annual “Kite Rally!” Talk about a relaxing way to spend the day…you can fly kites overlooking the lake and maybe even pack a picnic. If you feel like being a little more competitive, they’ll have contests you can join like the Highest Flyer and Best Made. You can bring your own kite or you can head to the Interpretive Center at the park and they’ll have all the materials for you to make your own. Put your own personality into it! (229.838.4706)
Since you’ll be in the area, head over to Providence Canyon for an Astronomy Night program with the crew from the Coca-Cola Space Science Center. Bring your own telescope or gaze thru one of theirs. Parking Fee: $5 Program: Free! (706.649.1470)
Here’s something to put a little dance in your step! It’s High School Musical at the Springer Opera House!! Here’s the scoop: While on a New Year’s Eve vacation, high school hoops star Troy and brainy Gabriella—two teens who are worlds apart—meet. During a karaoke contest, they discover their love for singing and an interest in each other. After vacation, Troy finds out that Gabriella is the new girl at his school…which sounds great, but all of their friends, coaches, and teachers think this pairing is all wrong! Then they decide to both audition for the upcoming high school musical and that turns their world and the school’s world upside down! The show runs now-March 19 with evening performances beginning at 7:30 and there's also a Sunday matinee on March 13 that starts at 2:30pm. Tickets are $38. (706.327.3688)
Sherlock’s Mystery Dinner Theatre is back in action, this time with a performance called “A Killer ‘80’s Reunion!” This is such a great idea for something different to get out and do or it has great potential for date night! Here’s how it works: you get to the Columbus Marriott no later than 6:45pm and the characters in the play will hand you the part that you’re going to play. You have a delicious dinner (salad, main course, and dessert) while you watch the action unfold. Then, you have to figure out…”Who Done it!” Those who correctly guess the identity of the murderer will have their names put into a drawing and if your name is drawn, you will win the prize of the evening! You can even come dressed in character, so pull out the shoulder pads and big hair! Tickets are $46 and remember that includes a 3-course meal AND the show. Here's a heads-up…the performances for this Friday & Saturday (March 4 & 5) are almost sold out, so if you want to go this weekend, you'd better call soon to make your reservation, or think about calling ahead for next week, because that'll be the final performance. If you feel like doing a little moving and grooving on ice this weekend, then head to the Columbus Civic Center because they’re opening up the rink for all of us to come skate! Bring your own skates or rent a pair for just $3. Sunday: 2:00-3:30pm and 4:30-6:00pm. Admission is $7. (706.653.4472)
And to think…these are just a few of the fun things going on this weekend, so hopefully you can find something that suits you to a "T."
Now, go have some fun!
