Bring on the Weekend Fun!

Lots of good stuff going on in Columbus, GA this weekend, so how about a few ideas to get you started so you can make some plans?  Remember, this is just a taste of things happening, but you can get the full list of events on the Community Calendar.

We’ve got a brand new production at the Springer Opera House (103 10th Street) called “The Lady With All The Answers.” And just who is this lady with all the answers? Advice columnist Ann Landers! For 50 years, Ann Landers answered thousands of letters on such personal and wacky issues as nude housekeeping, the proper way to hang toilet paper, sibling rivalry, religion and wandering spouses! She served up blunt, insightful and usually hilarious advice. But here’s the twist for this production, which stars Judy Leavell as Ann Landers…on a night in 1975, she confronts a fresh kind of heartbreak…her own…and she shares it with her readers.  The production is going on now through April 30 and tickets are just $35. Here’s a bit of trivia for you: Charles Lindbergh, the famous American aviator, bought his first plane, learned to fly and then soloed at Souther Field in Americus, GA in 1923! Not long after that, he made his non-stop flight from New York to Paris. So to celebrate this connection, they’re having The Lindbergh Boogie Aviation Festival this weekend in Americus (Jimmy Carter Regional Airport). There will be skydiving (including tandem skydives!), plane rides, a ‘flying feet’ 5K run, hot air balloon rides, remote control plane demos, classic car display, tons of stuff for kids (giant slide, face painting, clowns), food, live entertainment, and here’s the coolest thing…a paper airplane contest!!  It's taking place all day Saturday (April 16) from 9:00am until dark.  Admission is only $5 per vehicle, but there are additional fees if you want to do the tandem skydiving and plane rides.  (229.924.2646)

Don’t forget the Friday night Movie Under the Stars at Wetherby Field at Fort Benning will continue tonight at 8:30 pm. Tonight’s movies is Despicable Me. Bring pets, coolers, lawn chairs, but they’ll supply the free popcorn. This is completely free and open to the entire community.

It’s no secret this country has the best soldiers in the world and this weekend we get to find out who is the best of the best! It’s the Best Ranger Competition 2011, the 28th anniversary of this grueling competition. Originally created to salute the best two-man ‘buddy’ team in the Ranger Department at Ft. Benning, it’s evolved to determine the best two-man team from the entire US Armed Forces! The competition is 3-days of physical and mental tasks undertaken with very little rest between events. These guys will be competing in events like rifle & pistol marksmanship, 20 mile foot march with a 60 pound ruck sack, night land navigation using map & compass, rope climbing & rappelling…in all, about 60 events over 60 continuous hours…with no sleep time scheduled! The competitors don’t even know when and where they’ll be doing events, so check the website for details!  It's free to watch the competition, but make sure you take your ID with you to get on post.

Summer is going to be here before you know it and kids will be screaming that they’re bored and there’s nothing to do! Well, thankfully, there is a lot to do and here’s a great way to find out about everything all in one place! This Saturday from 1:00-4:00pm at the Civic Center, they’re having a Kids Camp & Summer Fun Fair where you can shop summer fun options for your kids and your family. Lots of different organizations will be there with information on camps, activities, attractions, destinations, and more. Plus, there’ll be clowns, Cottonmouths players, wild animals, face-painting, games, crafts and more for kids. You can register for a Stay-Cation Weekend at Callaway Gardens and a VIP Family Game Pack from the Columbus Lions! Presented by muscogeemoms.com. (Great website if you have kids!) Admission is free, but a $2.00 donation per adult would be greatly appreciated, which will benefit Partners in Education.

Lots going on at the Columbus Museum with their fundraiser “Let There Be Art” April 15-23. Parties, lunch & lecture, art show & sale, even a chance to win a fabulous trip to New York City…includes airfare, 3-nights accommodations, dinner at your choice of restaurant, a day of private, guided tours of art galleries and more! Like we promised, there's a lot to get out and do this weekend…the hard part will be deciding which ones to fit in your day…but that's a good problem to have!

Now, go have some fun,

shelby
