Big ‘Outdoor’ Fun this Weekend!
Looking for something to do this weekend? You came to the right spot! Here's a quick look at just a couple of things going on in and around Columbus, but don't forget to check out the Community Calendar to find out about more fun stuff taking place.
So how's this for some outdoor fun! In Uptown Columbus, on Bay Avenue overlooking the Chattahoochee River, the Aflac Outdoor Games will take place all weekend. The fun kicks off on Friday at noon & goes until 10:30 PM. There will be food, Ultimate Air Dogs, Agility Dogs, a Lumberjack Show, Archery Challenge, and the Char-Broil Pig Bowl. For the music lovers, there will be live performances at 6 PM and 9 PM. It all starts back over again on Saturday from 10 AM to 10:30 PM with more of the same competitions and more music and food, but on Saturday they’re adding the Mercedes Benz Grand Prix, so all you cycling fans will see some great action. Sunday hours are 10 AM to 6 PM with competition finals and awards presented throughout the day. Now in a new location, the same great competitions, delicious food and the added bonus of live music, this year’s Aflac Outdoor Games are sure to be the best yet! Admission is $15 for Adults, $10 for Children and Military. The full schedule of bands and events is available at www.aflacoutdoorgames.com .
Since you’ll already be heading to Uptown Columbus Saturday morning for the Aflac Outdoor Games, why not go a little early & get some shopping in at Market Days on Broadway. Vendors will be set up selling locally grown fresh produce, beautiful flowers, homemade baked goods, arts & crafts, & so much more. It’s such a neat atmosphere, walking along Broadway & picking up all the vegetables you already had on your grocery list anyway, along with a few unique items you won’t be able to find anywhere else. It almost feels like you’re on vacation at a street fair somewhere. We’re lucky to have these kinds of things available to us in Columbus so please go out & take advantage of this fantastic way to spend a leisurely Saturday morning (9:00am-12:00pm). 706.596.0111
If you're in the mood…or in the need…for something funny in your life, then you HAVE to go check out the performance at the Springer Opera House called "The Complete History of America (abridged). It's 600 years of history rolled up in to a hilarious 90-minute performance. Just remember, this is the last weekend for the show, so call quickly to make sure tickets are still available for the Friday and Saturday shows that start at 7:30pm. www.springeroperahouse.org 706.327.3688 Funny, funny, funny…...
It’s that time of year when everyone wants to redecorate their house. I don’t know what it is, but I always seem to get that itch right about now. Well, if you’re like me, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to pick up some great antiques for your home at the Uptown Columbus Antique Show. All weekend long there will be antique furniture, Persian rugs & many other decorative items on display and sale. And if you’re not in the market for home furnishings at the moment, there will also be fine estate jewelry for sale. The show features dealers from Atlanta area antique shows & from Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, North & South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia & Alabama. It all takes place at The Eagle & Phenix in Uptown Columbus. Admission is free and the event takes place Friday and Saturday (May 21 & 22) from 9:00am-6:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am-4:00pm. 706.507.4030
It could happen at a restaurant, during a party, really anytime…someone could need you to save their life. And this Saturday, you can learn how to do just that with CSU’s Heartsaver First Aid course at the Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center. Two EMTs will be your instructors and will teach you how to manage illness and injuries in the crucial first minutes of an incident until the pros arrive. You’ll learn how to quickly and calmly respond to a crisis and how to manage the scene. You’ll also become certified by the American Heart Association to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator on adults, children and infants. This could be one of the most important classes you’ll ever take and one if the most valuable ways to spend a Saturday (9:00am-6:00pm). Cost of the class is $89. 706.507.8070
