A Weekend of Laughter, Music, Words…and Love?
Hey, don't forget it's Valentine's Day this weekend, so grab your sweetie and make some plans to get out and have some fun! Here's a sample of what's going on, but don't forget, you can always check the Community Calendar to find out about these events and more. The calendar is pretty cool in that you can search for events by date, location, organization or type. Now…on with the show!
How about we have a little laughter in our lives this weekend!? This ought to do the trick…it’s Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family at the Columbus Civic Center. Madea is back after 5 long years of being off the stage. And Tyler Perry says that if you’ve never seen a Madea play, then you haven’t seen Madea at all! He based Madea on an aunt who lives in Georgia, as well as on his mother (sad note…she recently passed away.) Now remember that HE plays Madea, who is a grandma that dispenses wisdom in a "no-nonsense manner," and the fact that he’s 6’5” and is wearing a wig and a dress makes it all the funnier! FYI: The nickname "Madea" comes from a Southern African-American contraction of the words "mother dear." The play will take place on Sunday with two performances—3:00pm and 7:00pm. Tickets are $52.50 and $57.50. You can get tickets or more details by calling (706) 653.4460 or www.columbusciviccenter.org.
Here’s another great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetie! The Columbus Jazz Society is having their monthly concert and jam session at the Liberty Theatre and they are welcoming special guests, The Solar Quintet. This is one of those groups where the musicians are so talented that they can do it all…from fusion to Latin to traditional Jazz. And something else interesting about this band is that there isn’t a bandleader, so their rehearsal process is more like collaboration and discovery…it’s all about the innovation. This one you can really make a great night of because you get the concert, the jam session, and they’ll even be serving hamburgers and hot dogs thanks to CSUs Music Fraternity! Big date night potential here… Everything kicks off at 6:00pm with the concert and the jam session starts at 8:00pm. Admission is only $10. The Liberty Theatre is located at 813 8th Ave in Columbus. (706) 660.9295 or www.columbusjazzsociety.com.
So, we have to have a little romance this weekend and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra has just the thing! It’s a really unusual performance that involves live musicians and a silent movie. In fact, it’s one of the best silent movies ever…Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights.” It’s one of those movies that will make you laugh and make you cry with no one ever uttering a word! (The final scene in the movie will really touch your heart!) But not only do we get to see this great movie, but the CSO will be in the pit providing a live musical score as a compliment to the movie. And, they’ll be serving champagne and strawberries before the concert! This all takes place in Bill Heard Theatre at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts on Sunday beginning at 7:30pm. Tickets range from $28-$36. (706) 256.3612 or www.csoga.org.
Now, this sounds pretty intriguing! It’s an original stage play called “Words” & the plot sounds really interesting. It all takes place in a small Georgia town and centers around a character named Darlene Russell, who is anything but nice…in fact, most folks refer to her as DarMEAN! The only thing big enough to stop this mean machine is a small lump in her breast. She has to get cancer treatment and is forced to leave her restaurant in the hands of the employees she’s been mistreating. Remember the old saying “When the cat’s away, the mice will play?” That’s just what happens here, but when Darlene returns from her treatment, she is a completely different person and has done a complete turn-around in her personality. Looks like this one’s going to be filled with laughter and tears! This is also taking place at the Liberty Theatre Cultural Center this Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 3:00pm and 8:00pm and a Sunday matinee at 3:00pm. General admission is $15, tickets for military, students and Seniors are $13. For more info, call (706) 561.8065.
And finally, you can't get much more romantic than sitting under the stars with your special someone! Not only could this be a romantic night, but you might also learn something about the stars in the heavens. The crew at the Coca-Cola Space Science Center are hosting an "Astronomy Night" at Providence Canyon this Saturday night beginning at 7:00pm. You can take your own telescope or you can gaze through the ones the Science Center will have set up. No admission charge for this one! (706) 649.1470 or www.ccssc.org.
Cards, flowers, and chocolate are nice, but making a memory with your sweetheart is even better, so get out and have some fun this weekend! Ok, maybe chocolate wouldn't be a bad idea either…
