4th of July Weekend Fun in Columbus, GA!

Happy Birthday, America!  And with any celebration, you've got to have some fun activities and it looks like we've got a lot to choose from in Columbus, GA!  This is a good weekend for family fun, so you may want to check the big Event Calendar to get a look at some of your choices, but here are some of the ones that sounded like a lot of fun to me.

It was years in the making, but the longest urban whitewater course in the world is open and if you haven’t taken the plunge yet, you don’t know what you’re missing!  You don’t have to know anything about rafting, because the expert guides at Whitewater Express will take you thru a course before you go down the rapids.  And if, like me, you want to try it but aren’t sure about the big rapids…no problem!  If you go earlier in the day for the Classic Trip, that course is good for everybody 7 years of age and up.  For the more adventurous of us, take on the High Water Trip that casts off at 5:30pm everyday.  So the earlier trips will have anywhere from Class 1-3 rapids, but when they release the water from the dam at 4:00pm, that’s when you’ll experience some Class 4 action!  If nothing else, go grab a spot on the new island by the Powerhouse and watch the fun!

No pun intended, but the Cool History programs they present at Port Columbus each summer are some of the coolest things they do!  Each month during the summer, they take on a specific aspect of the Civil War and really bring it to life.  If you only get to make it to one program this year, try to make it this Saturday because this is the one called “The Medical Navy” and yep, this is the one where there’s some blood and guts involved! You’ll get the learn all about Civil War surgery and medicine at sea through some pretty lifelike reenactments and living history—like watching the ship’s surgeon set up the dining room table in the officer’s wardroom to do surgery on (and it REALLY looks like there is some serious surgery going on!) and then when they were done for the day, the table would be wiped down and then dinner would be served!  WOW!  Plus, they are even doing something new this year...they've teamed up with Ride on Bikes to do educational bike tours along the RiverWalk.

Prepare to let your “inner percussion diva” come out and play this Saturday night at the Uptown Drum Circle!  Now, before you say something sensible like “I don’t know how to play the drums or any instrument for that matter”–-this isn’t a drum class…you don’t have to have any musical expertise, just go to have fun.  If you do have your own drum or any other percussion instrument, bring it with you…or make your own.  They’ll also have some instruments on hand that you can borrow to join in on jam.  Not to mention that the kids will be entertained too with face painting, temporary tattoos and crazy hair colors.  There will also be belly and fire dancing demos, performance artists, raffles, and if you really get into the moment, they’ll even have the jingly belly dancing hip scarves for sale!  It's all happening in the 1100 block of Broadway and there is no admission.

Callaway Gardens has their All-American Weekend happening with all sorts of live music, tons of beach activities, great food, and weather permitting...fireworks Saturday night!  And if you need fun stuff to do with the kids during the week, The Rock Ranch had their "Fun in the Summer Time" event going on July 9-27.  Lots of fun stuff going on...anything from train rides, to cane pole fishing to blackberry picking!

Whatever you wind up doing, make it a safe and Happy 4th!

Now, go have some fun...
